Basic vs Comprehensive health insurance

BASIC HEALTH INSURANCE

Coverage of the costs of necessary and urgent treatment and hospitalisation at all healthcare facilities in the Czech Republic to the extent necessary.

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH INSURANCE

The insurance meets the requirements of Act No. 326/1999 Sb., on the Residence of Foreign Nationals in the Czech Republic, and is recognised by the Ministry of Interior and the Foreign Police of the Czech Republic.

The scope of comprehensive health insurance is as close to identical to that provided under public medical insurance in the Czech Republic.

1. Essential emergency numbers

112 - this is a general emergency number for all emergency services (equivalent to the 911)

USEFUL TIP!

Update your emergency contacts in your phone and make sure at least one of your emergency contacts is locally based and has your insurance details (see Section no. 2)

USEFUL TIP!

Save the insurance assistance number to your phone, take a photo of your insured person's card and add it to the number. Share this contact with your friend or a family member.

3. Visiting doctor & private clinics

Clients should visit contractual doctor and healthcare facility, except in case of the need for acute care. Prior to any visit, call the assistance services (Section no. 2) for up-to-date list of doctors. The assistance service also has list of doctors speaking English.

Each of the insurance companies have a different level of coverage comes to the number of contractual facilities and doctors but generally, all insurance companies have large hospitals in big cities covered.

PRIVATE CLINICS

Unless it is specifically part of your insurance contract, membership fees for private clinics are not included in your contract. If you agree with the assistance services prior the visit of a private clinic, you will pay for the services and claim back or the insurance company will care for the bill (subject to agreement). The claim (see section "claims") is then proceeded, but coverage is only to the level of national health care standard.

USEFUL TIP!

There is a background procedure that has to happen in order for you not to pay out of pocket, hence it is essential always calling the assistance services, even when revisiting the same doctor. Private hospitals will recover some of the care from the membership fees and will only charge the excess to your insurance company. As this is your contractual duty, failing to do so may result in your claim falling through.

4. The level of coverage

Please refer to your insurance contract (the terms and conditions) for details of the limits.

BASIC HEALTH INSURANCE

Basic health insurance will have lower limits, subject to insurance company of your choice and covers only accidents and emergencies.

COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH INSURANCE

Insurance benefit is subject to a limit per insured event, with the option of also taking out supplementary insurance such as liability, Schengen area emergency cover, hospitalisation or injury (only with some of the insurance companies).

5. Prevention & vaccination

Comprehensive insurance only

This differs per insurance company and the level of premium you decide to purchase (check the Terms&Conditions or the IPID - the product information document). However, majority of the insurance companies cover 1x GP check up a year. Some have added dental prevention and gynaecology visit (for dental limits and prevention care see section "dental").

VACCINATIONS

You are eligible for mandatory vaccination (as per the CZ national health care standards).

COVID-19 VACCINATIONS

At the moment, registration for vaccination in the Czech Republic is possible only for participants in public medical insurance.

6. Medication

PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS

Some of the insurance companies offer e-prescription (Colonnade). Prescriptions are otherwise given by doctors. The same applies. The client pays for the drugs himself at the pharmacy and then asks the insurance company for reimbursement (see section "claims").

CARRYING MEDICINES FROM ABROAD

Many international travelers carry medicines with them to treat acute or chronic health problems. However, each country has its own laws related to medicines. Medicines that are commonly prescribed or available over the counter in your country might be unlicensed or considered controlled substances in other countries.

USEFUL TIP!

Check with the Czech embassy - travelling with medication for the rules before you travel. It is useful to keep the medication unpacked in its original packaging and an original of a prescription or a letter from your physician stating that you need the medication for your personal use. www.mzv.gov.cz - travelling with medication https://mzv.gov.cz/washington/en/consular_information/travel_to_CR/travelling_with_medication.html
